How should we define AI?

AI is a prominent topic in the media and a highly sought-after skill in today’s job market. However, the term “AI” often means different things to different people. To provide clarity, let’s explore three applications of AI that demonstrate its various aspects.

Application 1. Self-driving cars

One such application is self-driving cars, which rely on a blend of AI techniques to function effectively. These vehicles use search and planning algorithms to determine the optimal route from point A to point B, computer vision to detect and interpret obstacles, and decision-making under uncertainty to navigate the challenges of dynamic and unpredictable environments. Each of these components must operate with near-perfect accuracy to ensure safety and prevent accidents.

Application 2. Content recommendation

Much of the information we encounter in our daily lives is tailored to our individual preferences. Examples include content on social media platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok; personalized online advertisements; music suggestions on Spotify; and movie recommendations on streaming services such as Netflix and Max. Additionally, many online publishers, including news outlets and broadcasting companies, as well as search engines like Google, customize the content they provide to match user interests.

Application 3. Image and video processing

Facial recognition has become a widely used technology in various consumer, business, and government applications. Examples include organizing photos based on individuals, automatic tagging on social media, and streamlining passport control processes.

AI aims to enable computers to mimic human brain functions in decision-making and to learn from past data without the need for external instructions.
